Abstract

Manikin-based training has been an integral part of both civilian and military-based medical education and skills sustainment for decades. While a powerful training modality, training with manikins is limited by significant cost, high training requirements for educators, limited customizability, and less availability in forward operating environments. Virtual reality technology-enhanced simulation has the potential to meet these training gaps. Using fully immersive head-mounted displays, learners are transported to a virtual environment set in a far-forward location and tasked to provide ongoing medical care in realistic, complex medical training scenarios. Virtual reality training platforms provide an immersive experience that can compress training time to readiness, supporting operational requirements for prolonged casualty care.
